CLICK HERE TO SEE THE FINAL REVEAL
Hey friends,
So technically, yes, it’s One Room Challenge reveal week, but are we done? Not quite.
We don’t want to give you a full reveal until everything is totally done, and we’re about halfway through stenciling the linoleum floor, so the full smattering of satisfying before and after shots is coming your way so soon.
Turns out paint takes a long time to dry, and I really don’t like being anywhere that isn’t bed after 8:30 p.m. these days, so we’ll be another day or two. Make sure to follow us on Instagram for the real-time process, though!
In the meantime, this week we planked the ceiling to cover our popcorn ceilings (DIY post coming on that one soon), we added the trim and finally finished our faux wall sconces.
This week we’re going to show you how to install a light fixture without wiring, like we did above the open shelves.
If you’ve missed our other One Room Challenge updates (and the tutorials for all the DIYs we’ve done in this room), check them out here and make sure you follow us on Instagram:

This is a huge Instagram trend right now – we first saw it on Nesting With Grace’s Instagram and it’s been replicated a lot since then. I think I’m going to install another one above the new photo ledge I just built for our living room and maybe even above our TV when we eventually build a fireplace or some kind of built-in unit around it. Somebody stop me, it’s getting so wild over here.
Anyway, if you also want to recreate this magic light trick, here’s how we installed a light fixture without wiring:
Tools & Materials
- Light fixture (here are the ones we used)
- Puck lights like these
- Screwdriver
- Drill
- Plumbing pieces
- Superglue

Step 1: Superglue plumbing piece to puck light
So, actually, my first step was spray painting the light fixtures brass instead of the black they came in. I usually am all about black accents in decor, but for this room we were going for a different vibe and it’s evidently really hard to find nice light fixtures in that color that aren’t a really bright gold or $4,578.
But, first you’ll take your little plumbing piece and add some superglue to the flat side, then stick that into the middle of the back of the puck light. Leave it for a little while to dry and get super stuck.
Step 2: Install wall sconce
Next you’ll clip the wiring in the back of the light fixture because, obviously, this is a post about how to install a light fixture without wiring so you’re not going to need it. Then just install the light fixture like you would any other light but without the wiring – so drill the back mount into the wall at the right height and then attach the front piece.
Step 3: Screw in the puck lights
The beauty of those little plumbing pieces is that the other side is essentially the same as the screw part of a lightbulb, so you’ll just screw it in there like you would a lightbulb. Use the remote control to turn the lights on and off, dim them, put them on a timer, whatever.
Note: Because the lights are battery-operated, they’ll need to be replaced at some point, but it’s easy just to unscrew it, replace and screw it right back in.
So there you have it, a super simple, budget-friendly and impressive DIY to add lighting and a light fixture anywhere you want! These lights made our pantry room look so much more fancy than a regular old place to keep your food, and having the remote control will actually be really handy because the main light switch is way on the other side of the room.
